St. John Ervine letters to John H. Hutchinson with a transcription of Hutchinson's responses, 1930-1934.

The collection consists of four items, including: three letters from Ervine to Hutchinson: 17 Dec. 1930, praising the richly-drawn characters in Henry Handel Richardson's novel, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony; 22 Dec. 1930, thanking him for a copy of Mrs. O'Shaughnessy's Viennese Medley; 23 Nov. 1934, concerning Hutchinson's quoting a young man and Ervine's attitude toward dramatic critics. Also, handwritten copy of Hutchinson's letters to Ervine that give his views of The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, three numbered epistles on one sheet.

St. John Greer Ervine had a long and influential career in the theatre. Born to deaf-mute Protestant parents in a suburb of Belfast, he moved to London in 1900 where he worked as a clerk and became active in the Fabian Society.
